Darjeeling fondly called “ Queen of the Hills”,
provides a perfect gateway for those seeking to be in harmony with nature.
Darjeeling is located at the northernmost part of West- Bengal in eastern
India. Darjeeling is in the foothills of the Himalayas. Darjeeling is famous
for beautiful Hill station and Tea. About Darjeeling, Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore says
– “ Flowers are everywhere. The days are cold and the sun almost seems to play
hide and seek with us”.
Darjeeling Municipality was established in 1850. Tea gardene’s
continued to grow. In the 1860s, peace was restored in the borders. During this
time, immigrants mainly from Nepal were recruited to work in the tea garden,
construction sites and other agriculture related projects. Scottish
missionaries undertook the construction of schools and many welfare centers for
the British residents. Loreto Convent in 1847, St. Paul’s School in 1864,
Planters’ Club in 1868, Lloyd’s Botanical Garden in 1878, St. Joseph’s School
in 1888, Railway Station in 1891, and Town Hall (present Municipality Building)
in 1921. With the opening of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway in 1881, smooth
communication between the town and the plains below further increased the
development of the region. “Darjeeling disaster” was an earthquake in 1898 that
caused considerable damage to the young town and its native population.
Darjeeling Hill Town is 6700 Ft (2025m) high from the sea level. Darjeeling
district is under Jalpaiguri Administrative Division.
